SEC Proposes Easing 'Pay-To-Play' Rules for Investment Advisors

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed easing its “pay-to-play” rule, which restricts investment advisors from managing public pension funds after political contributions to state or local officials. The proposal, submitted to the White House for review, seeks to reduce compliance burdens that the SEC says unnecessarily restrict advisors. The existing rule imposes a two-year ban on receiving fees for managing public assets following certain political donations and limits fundraising activities.
