SEC Preps Plan To Widen Investor Access to Private Markets

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is preparing a proposal to broaden retail investors’ access to private markets and allow investment advisors to charge performance fees to a wider range of clients. The plan would amend federal investment laws to permit greater private-market exposure through registered funds and modernize performance-fee rules. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has argued that private-market opportunities should not be limited to wealthy investors. Supporters say broader access could give individuals exposure to fast-growing private companies, while critics warn that private investments generally provide less disclosure, making them harder to value and potentially riskier. The proposal remains subject to White House review and public comment.
