SEC Floats 11% Budget Cut for Fiscal 2027

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed cutting its budget to $1.9 billion for the next fiscal year, an 11% reduction from current levels, while emphasizing efficiency, technological modernization and fiscal discipline. Despite the decrease, the agency noted its funding is deficit-neutral due to transaction fees paid by financial firms. The SEC plans to maintain operations within a tighter budget while still hiring selectively in priority areas, targeting staffing at 4,177 employees, a slight uptick from the 4,024 enacted in fiscal 2026.
