SEC Chief Taps Armed Forces Judge To Lead Enforcement Unit

Margaret “Meg” Ryan, a former military judge and one-time clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, has been appointed to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) enforcement division. Announced by SEC Chair Paul Atkins, Ryan brings decades of judicial experience from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, where she was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2006. Her appointment marks a shift toward focusing on traditional fraud and insider trading cases, while easing the prior administration’s aggressive stance on cryptocurrency enforcement and large corporate penalties.
