Hugh McColl retired from Bank of America as its first CEO in 2001 but left a mark — not only as a builder of the nation’s second-largest bank, but as a mentor. Among those who cite his wisdom is current BofA CEO Brian Moynihan. “Even as a retired CEO, he was completely driven to do more things,” Moynihan said. “He didn't think when his CEO shift ended that his job of helping make Charlotte a better place ended.” McColl's direct approach is well-known among his followers, and that urgency translated into action-oriented mentorship. Even though McColl left BofA nearly 25 years ago, his influence remains embedded in the bank's culture. “The values that we have as a company are the same as they were, probably, when he was CEO,” Moynihan said. “We build on the shoulders of the work he did. The shoulders we stand on are his.”
