Life Insurance Premium Growth Fuels Q2 Gains for US Life Insurers

U.S. life insurers posted modest overall growth in the second quarter, with direct premiums and considerations rising 2.0% year over year to $268.92 billion. Life insurance was the strongest area, as combined individual and group premiums increased 7.7% to $60.61 billion. Group life premiums surged 20.9%, although much of the increase reflected large bank- and corporate-owned transactions, while individual life premiums grew 4.1%. Individual annuity considerations rose just 0.3%, despite LIMRA reporting 3.9% sales growth, driven by variable annuities and RILAs. Traditional variable annuity sales increased faster than registered index-linked annuities for the first time since separate tracking began. Group annuities declined 6.9% amid weak pension risk-transfer activity.
