Life Insurance Applications Increased 15.2% in September

Life insurance applications rose 15.2% year over year in September, marking the strongest September growth on record, according to the MIB Life Index. Applications increased 5.6% from August, while activity for the first nine months of 2026 climbed 15.6% compared with the same period in 2025. Older applicants drove much of the growth, with applications among people aged 70 and older surging 50.1% in September, followed by a 31.8% increase among those aged 60–69. Term life applications grew 23.2%, while whole life rose 22.2% and universal life increased 1.1%. Growth was strongest among applicants aged 40 and older, while activity declined 1.3% among those under 30. Applications increased across nearly all coverage amounts, with particularly strong gains in higher-value policies over the first nine months.
