How We Got Here: Rene Williams on Mentorship, Leadership and Lasting Impact

Every career journey has defining moments — opportunities taken, challenges overcome and lessons learned along the way. Through the “How We Got Here” series, the Black Voices Unmuted Task Force is sharing the stories behind the professionals who are helping shape the future of financial services.
These conversations highlight the unique journeys, lessons learned and perspectives that shape successful careers in financial services. For our first installment, BISA staff spoke with Rene Williams, a financial services leader whose path from operations to leadership demonstrates the value of continuous learning, strong mentorship and a commitment to helping others grow.
1. What initially drew you to the financial services industry, and how did your path evolve along the way?
I was drawn to the opportunity to help people improve their financial well-being. My career evolved from operational roles into compliance and leadership, where I can support both members and employees.
2. When did you realize this was the career for you?
When I saw how financial guidance and strong processes could make a meaningful difference in people's lives and experiences.
3. What challenges did you face entering or advancing in the industry, and how did you navigate them?
Learning new regulations and adapting to change were ongoing challenges. I overcame them through continuous learning, mentorship and a willingness to take on new responsibilities.
4. Can you share a defining moment or breakthrough that shaped your career journey?
Moving into leadership was a pivotal moment because it allowed me to influence outcomes beyond my individual contributions.
5. How has your perspective on success changed from the start of your career to where you are today?
Early on, success meant personal achievement. Today, success means developing others, building strong teams and creating lasting impact.
6. Is there a person or mentor who made a meaningful impact on your career?
Several leaders have influenced my growth by challenging me to think strategically, embrace change and invest in others.
8. What advice would you give someone pivoting into the industry?
Be curious, stay adaptable and focus on building relationships. Technical knowledge can be learned, but a strong work ethic and willingness to grow are invaluable.
9. What actionable changes do you believe are most critical to increasing the number and success of Black financial advisors?
Expand mentorship opportunities, increase visibility of successful Black professionals, and create intentional pathways for career development and leadership growth.
10. If you could give one message to the next generation of Black financial service professionals, what would it be?
Believe in your value, keep learning and pursue opportunities with confidence. Your perspective and leadership are needed in this industry.
