Holding to the Highest Standard: BISA Circle of Excellence Awardee Jay McAnelly on Leadership and Influence
by: BISA Staff
Annually at the BISA Annual Conference, BISA presents its highest honor — the Circle of Excellence Award — to a leader who exemplifies extraordinary commitment, vision and influence within the financial services industry. Reserved for senior-level executives with at least 20 years of cumulative industry experience, this prestigious award celebrates those whose lasting contributions have shaped both their institutions and the broader BISA community.
This year, BISA proudly recognizes Jay McAnelly, group vice president at Ameriprise Financial Institutions Group, as one of three 2025 inductees to the Circle of Excellence. In the following Q&A, he reflects on the pivotal moments of his career, the personal significance of this award and his insight into the future of our industry.
Reflecting on your time in the financial services industry, are there any pivotal moments or experiences that significantly shaped your professional journey and leadership style?
The first three years of my career were spent as a financial advisor at an independent firm, and while I gained valuable experience, I struggled to find a rhythm. Everything changed when I transitioned to a role within a community bank. That move was transformative — not just professionally, but financially and personally. It was within the bank setting that I truly found my stride and discovered a passion and love for the banking business.
Later, I had the opportunity to lead as the owner and operator of an independent broker-dealer during the financial crisis — a period that tested every aspect of my leadership. That experience taught me the irreplaceable value of relationships with clients, product partners, clearing firms, and most importantly, with my team. I also came to see how critical strong, steady leadership is during uncertain times.
The Circle of Excellence Award celebrates long-term commitment to the profession and BISA. What does this recognition mean to you personally?
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and learning from some of the most influential leaders in our space — individuals who’ve left a lasting mark on our industry and inspired a higher standard of excellence. To be honored by BISA and recognized among this group is deeply humbling.
I’ve always believed in BISA’s mission and the role it plays in elevating bank and credit union investment programs across the country. Being part of the BISA Board of Directors allows me to give back and continue to foster a culture of leadership and advancement in our industry, something I take seriously and value greatly.
What challenges have you faced in driving innovation, and how did you overcome them to achieve success?
One of the most influential books I’ve read is The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday. It reshaped the way I approach challenges and obstacles. Whether it’s resistance to change, unforeseen delays, or external pressures, I’ve learned to see obstacles not as roadblocks, but as opportunities for growth.
Driving innovation in our industry isn’t easy. It requires vision, persistence, and a willingness to challenge the status quo — often in the face of skepticism. But by staying grounded in purpose and leading with resilience, those very challenges can become catalysts for meaningful progress.
Can you share any advice for newer industry professionals who want to leave a lasting impact on the industry?
A piece of advice I received from a banker early in my career was “Be the first one in and the last to leave.” That mindset — one of relentless commitment and deep responsibility — has stuck with me ever since.
If you want to make a lasting impact, you have to outwork the competition, stay curious, and invest in relationships. Success in this business comes not just from what you know, but from how consistently and intentionally you show up — for your clients, your colleagues, and your mission.
Looking ahead, what emerging trends or developments in the financial services industry are you most excited about?
I’m excited about the growing momentum in integrating wealth management more deeply into the banking experience, which creates stronger client relationships and more comprehensive service. We’re uniquely positioned to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, often at moments that matter most. I’m incredibly proud of how far our industry has come and grateful to be part of the journey as we shape what’s next.
Anything else you would like to add?
I feel so fortunate to be part of an industry that has such a meaningful impact on people’s lives. As financial professionals, we have the opportunity — and responsibility — to help clients navigate important decisions with confidence. That sense of purpose is what drives me.
