SEC Enforcement Activity Drops

Enforcement activity by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) fell more than 20% in fiscal 2025, with 456 cases filed as the agency shifted its approach under new leadership. Despite fewer actions, total penalties reached $17.9 billion, largely due to a long-running Ponzi scheme case; excluding that, penalties totaled $2.7 billion, down from $8.2 billion the previous year. Chair Paul Atkins said the SEC is prioritizing serious misconduct like fraud over high case volumes. The decline also reflects staff losses, leadership changes and a broader strategic “reset” in enforcement philosophy.
