Fidelity Boards the ETF Share Class Express
by: Leo Almazora
Fidelity is launching its first exchange-traded fund (ETF) share classes, adding ETF versions of three existing mutual fund strategies: the Fidelity Intermediate Municipal Income ETF (FIMU), Fidelity Real Estate Income ETF (FREI) and Fidelity Short-Term Bond ETF (FSTB). The move follows recent regulatory approvals that opened the ETF share-class structure to firms beyond Vanguard, which had long held a unique position in the market. ETF share classes allow investors to access the same portfolio, management team and performance history as a mutual fund while gaining ETF benefits such as intraday trading, potential tax efficiency and often lower costs. Fidelity clients will be able to convert eligible mutual fund holdings into ETF shares without triggering taxes. The launch reflects growing investor and advisor preference for ETFs, though operational, compliance and capacity-management challenges remain as the industry adapts to the new structure.
