De Novos, Deposit Insurance Reform Find Bipartisan Momentum

The House Financial Services Committee has advanced several bipartisan banking bills, signaling cooperation on issues like de novo bank creation and deposit insurance reform. Lawmakers emphasize that strict regulations have hindered the creation of new community banks, which have declined from around 10,000 in 1995 to just 4,000 today. Legislation under consideration would ease capital and compliance requirements for new banks and credit unions and update deposit insurance thresholds to bolster financial access in underserved areas.
