Circle of Excellence Q&A: Michael Miroballi
by: BISA Staff and Michael Miroballi
Mike Miroballi’s devotion to the industry is clear. He’s spent his more than 30 years in financial services, at companies including Merrill Lunch, Citigroup, BMO Financial Group, and now The Huntington Investment Company, where, as president, he leads the strategic direction and oversees regulatory governance and priority setting. His devotion to BISA shines through his current role as BISA board president, and he has added incredible value to the association.
These achievements have earned Mike well-deserved recognition as one of this year’s 2023 Circle of Excellence awardees. In this Q&A, Mike shares his journey through the industry and how BISA has provided value to him throughout his career.
What does being a "Circle of Excellence" winner mean to you?
It was humbling to be awarded this recognition. I was honored to be recognized for some of the impact I have had on the industry, but I truly believe that I have benefited from working with and learning from amazing professionals. And any impact I have had was a team effort.
How has BISA impacted your career and relationships in the industry?
BISA has provided me the opportunity to connect with amazing industry leaders. We have developed a community of leaders who work together to help make our industry better for investors and for those who choose a career path in financial services.
What is the moment, decision or result you are most proud of from your career?
I am most proud of seeing the success and career progression of those I have worked with throughout my career. Making positive change that helps lay the groundwork for an advisor to build a successful practice is one example. But I have had the privilege of working with talented people who have truly had a passion for what we do and how we can help our clients obtain financial independence.
Tell us about one person who has inspired you on your career journey. What was their role in leading you to where you are today?
I worked with a wealth leader who truly inspired me and gave me the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone. What he did more than anything was trust me. He provided counsel when I needed it, but also gave me the latitude to solve problems on my own. Knowing that I had a leader who had my back and trusted me to make sound decisions really gave me the confidence to be a decision maker and take calculated risks. That has had a major impact on my development as a leader. I have tried to do the same thing as I lead my team.
What is one piece of advice you have for individuals looking to advance their careers in the financial industry?
The one piece of advice that I would give is to listen to people who have demonstrated skills and knowledge of our industry and learn from them. I have learned from the people around me and continue to do so. Also, never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone to do something that stretches your knowledge and skill set. You will grow from those experiences.
How has this ever-evolving industry adjusted your day-to-day responsibilities?
The changing environment of our industry has required me to be very flexible and ready to pivot. You not only have to accept change, but you also must seek opportunities to change. We now have colleagues who represent many generations that are influenced by different experiences that shape attitudes and habits. You must be able to understand and relate to each of those generations and perspectives. If I just approach my role from my generational perspective, I can not be a successful leader.
The Circle of Excellence Award, BISA’s most prestigious award, honors and celebrates extraordinary leaders for their long-term commitment to the profession and association.
