Annual BISA Convention Opening Keynote Speaker to Advisory Industry: 'Rip Up The Playbook'
by: Rich Blake
Bank, insurance, and securities industry professionals seeking to differentiate themselves in a crowded field would do well to "rip up the financial advisors' playbook," said entrepreneur and co-founder of Marquis Jet Jesse Itzler in a keynote address kicking off the BISA 2020 Convention Wednesday, March 4.
"How would you do your job if no one had ever taught you how to do it?" asked Itzler, current co-owner of the Atlanta Hawks. "Throw out the playbook, break from routine, and do something different. That's where innovation comes from."
Industry CEOs, sales managers, compliance officers, technology experts and advisors gathered at The Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida, for the annual BISA event, which on its second day featured a series of breakout sessions, including one on regulatory changes, and a networking reception in the exhibitors' hall following Itzler's session. Recalling getting started in music, air travel and beverage industries, without having any experience, Itzler urged attendees to continuously challenge themselves to think differently.
After doing a series of deal that expanded his net worth, the 51-year-old recalled meeting with a series of advisors who all seemed to recite the same lines, until one set himself apart by asking a question about his legacy. "Do you want to leave your kids a boatload of money or a boatload of experiences?" the advisor asked, prompting Itzler to realize he had found his advisor. Change takes time and relentless perseverance, Itzler said, citing his ability to compete in 100-mile races despite never having done so. "We do not negotiate with our goals," he said.
