Americans Rank Last in Global Financial Literacy, Allianz Finds
by: Christopher Williams
Americans ranked lowest in financial literacy among eight developed countries surveyed by Allianz Research, with one-third demonstrating low knowledge and just 13% achieving the highest level. The study found widespread gaps in understanding compound interest, inflation, risk and diversification, with only 28% of respondents globally correctly estimating inflation. Nearly 60% of Americans overestimated inflation. Despite weak financial knowledge, the U.S. had the largest share of respondents planning to save more, led by Gen Z and millennials. Younger Americans were not significantly more financially literate than older generations. Allianz also found that AI is increasingly used for financial advice, but greater confidence does not necessarily translate into better financial decision-making. The researchers urged governments, employers and financial institutions to expand financial education and encourage smarter long-term investing.
