The Words of Dr. King and Other Leaders
by: BISA Staff
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the words of leaders who paved the way to a more inclusive and diverse environment, as well as remind ourselves to stand up in support of positive change.
“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.” – Thurgood Marshall
“The need for change bulldozed a road down the center of my mind.” — Maya Angelou
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” — Frederick Douglass
“Every time you state what you want or believe, you’re the first to hear it. It’s a message to both you and others about what you think is possible. Don’t put a ceiling on yourself.” — Oprah Winfrey
Voices and Stories of BISA Members
Listening to the stories and experiences of others, such as the quoted leaders above, can provide greater context and understanding in the struggles and achievements of those who pave the way to a more inclusive and diverse environment.
We were fortunate to sit with Martin Powell of CUNA Mutual Group for the BISA Portfolio Podcast, where he shared his inspiring story, how his passion for equality and inclusivity was instilled in him at a young age, moving snapshots of his life and his pathway to leadership. We were also lucky to have Vanessa Wilson of BMO Wealth Management and Jim Nickens of InSource, Inc. participate in a Q&A about their experiences in the financial services industry.
