The Exotic Makeover of the Once-Boring ETF Market

The once-staid U.S. exchange-traded fund (ETF) market is rapidly shifting toward riskier, higher-fee products as firms chase profits from record investor inflows. Nearly 1,000 actively managed ETFs launched last year, many featuring leveraged strategies, crypto exposure or complex derivatives, far from the low-cost index funds that built the industry. While most inflows still favor traditional funds, analysts at Morningstar warn that many new offerings resemble speculative gambles and may not last.
