New Bill Would Let Advisers Unlock Accredited Investor Status for Clients

A bill introduced in the U.S. House would create a new path for clients to qualify as accredited investors when they receive personalized investment advice from a registered investment adviser or broker-dealer. The Informed Investor Access Act would move beyond the current framework, which relies largely on income and net worth thresholds, and would let professional advice help determine whether an investor can access private market opportunities. Supporters say the bill would broaden access to private equity, venture capital and other alternative investments while preserving investor protections through advisers’ fiduciary duties and broker-dealers’ Regulation Best Interest obligations.
