Most Asset Managers Are Using AI, but Few Let It Call the Shots

A Mercer survey of 131 global asset managers found AI is now widely embedded in investment research and operational workflows, but rarely trusted with autonomous trading or portfolio decisions. While 55% of firms use AI in at least one investment process, only 5% allow it to make semi-autonomous or autonomous investment recommendations or trades. Most firms use AI for automation, efficiency, idea generation, research and market analysis rather than direct portfolio construction. Managers reported gains mainly in operational efficiency and research quality, not investment returns. Key barriers include data quality issues, regulatory uncertainty and governance concerns. Still, adoption is accelerating, with 91% of surveyed firms planning to expand AI use over the next year.
