Most Americans Oblivious to Social Security’s Projected Demise

A Nationwide Retirement Institute survey found that 80% of Americans believe Social Security needs changes, with 51% favoring higher taxes on top earners, 42% supporting higher employer taxes and 38% backing reduced benefits for higher-income recipients. Yet respondents estimated the trust fund would be depleted around 2043, while the 2026 Trustees Report projects depletion closer to 2032. Only 20% have a clear plan if benefits are reduced, while 61% expect lawmakers to act before cuts occur. Advisors appear to improve preparedness: 39% of those working with advisors have a contingency plan, compared with 10% without one.
