House Passes Bill To Revise Definition of Accredited Investors

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a slate of bipartisan legislation, including a measure that would modify the professional criteria to be classified as an “accredited investor” under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The legislation would allow those with “demonstrable education or job experience” to make investments in the private market even if they do not qualify under the SEC’s other requirements. The SEC’s designation of an accredited investor currently requires a net worth of $1 million, or an annual income of $200,000 or more from the past two years, to be able to invest in private company shares.
