Banks Get New Federal Guidance on AI Cyber Risks

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a preliminary draft of the Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence, providing banks and other organizations guidance on AI-related cyber risks. The voluntary framework tailors NIST’s existing Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 to address securing AI system components, conducting AI-enabled defenses and thwarting AI-powered attacks. The guidance emphasizes treating AI as software while distinguishing between defending AI systems and using AI for defense. NIST is accepting public comments on the draft until Jan. 30, 2026, with a full public draft expected later in the year.
