Americans Trust Human Connection Over AI for Financial Advice, Study Finds

Nearly a third of Americans use AI personally or at work, but most prefer human advisors for financial planning, according to Northwestern Mutual’s 2025 “Planning and Progress Study.” Over half trust humans over AI for investment decisions, with 56% preferring human guidance and only 13% trusting AI. For creating tailored financial plans, 53% choose humans versus 15% for AI. Still, 47% favor advisors who use AI tools, especially Gen Z and millennials (54% each), compared with 46% of Gen X and 36% of boomers. The study polled 4,626 adults in January, highlighting strong openness to AI-assisted — rather than AI-only — financial planning.
