BISA's Research Committee: A Conversation With Kevin Mummau
by: BISA Staff, Kevin Mummau
Sponsoring and commissioning research that will help the BISA community is continuing to become a focus of our association. These efforts are spearheaded by the Research Committee, co-led by Kevin Mummau and John Olerio. We asked Kevin of CUSO Financial Services how the committee is ensuring a research-focused future for BISA.
How would you describe your committee's role in BISA’s mission?
Our mission is to support our member firms to be best-of-class in delivering wealth management, investment and insurance solutions. The research committee and the projects we lead are integral in helping our member firms determine what the differentiators to success are.
What 2022 research committee success or achievement are you most proud of?
I find it most rewarding when a member shares a success story of using the research outputs to engage senior management in increasing support for investment and insurance offerings within their financial institution.
Can you share about this year’s research project with Cerulli, which studied how to retain and recruit advisors?
Maintaining and growing our advisor force is imperative to our growth and future as an industry. The findings of this project will empower our management teams with the information to help us better understand the future best practices to attract, develop and support the advisors of the future.
Stay tuned until May to see the results of this study.
Where do you see BISA making an impact in the research space?
BISA can support and deliver this type of third-party research, which helps our member firms’ management support their cases. For example, if they’re aiming to present to their executive suite arguments for changing current practice to make way for future growth, the research from Cerulli can help support this.
What made you interested in this topic?
Our programs have seen a great change in our business and revenue model in the recent years. Couple that with different motivations in our future generation of advisors and the current research is very timely to help us better understand the changes and future best practices needed to allow for our future growth.
What are some research areas you think BISA should investigate?
One future area I see would be to study the expectations today’s investment clients have of their advisors, along with their appetite to look to a bank or credit union for investment advice.
