U.S. Bank Regulator Issues Guidelines To Avert 'Debanking'

The U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) issued new guidance aimed at preventing banks from “debanking” customers on political or religious grounds, following President Donald Trump’s directive to scrutinize oversight for bias. Comptroller Jonathan Gould said the agency is working to stop the “weaponization” of the financial system, citing concerns that individuals have been surveilled or denied banking access based on beliefs. The OCC also outlined limits on data sharing when banks report suspicious activity.
