The ETF Crazy Train Is Picking Up Speed

The exchange-traded fund (ETF) market is expanding at a record pace, with 728 new U.S. ETFs launched in the first half of 2026 as issuers race to capitalize on investor demand for specialized, leveraged, thematic and tax-focused products. While many new funds will likely fail, providers continue launching large numbers in hopes that a few become major successes. Popular offerings include AI, robotics, space, single-stock leveraged ETFs and tax-efficient investment vehicles. Although established, low-cost index funds continue to dominate assets, experts caution that many niche ETFs carry higher risks, unexpected tax consequences and the potential for significant losses as regulators maintain a permissive stance.
