The Current State of Diversity and Inclusion in the Industry
The Bank Insurance & Securities Association (BISA) Diversity & Inclusion Committee recently created an infographic that depicts the status of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the banking, insurance and securities sector. This research explores race, ethnicity and gender as it pertains to those working in the financial services industry.
Jacinda Norvell, BISA Diversity & Inclusion Committee Chair and senior vice president at SunTrust Private Wealth Management, said D&I within companies provides richer thought leadership and employee engagement.
“For our industry, we need to resemble and resonate with the clients, companies and communities that we serve,” Norvell said.
In Norvell’s view, the industry’s biggest challenge with D&I is attaining more diverse candidates and helping them grow and advance in their careers.
“BISA and the BISA Diversity & Inclusion Committee support member firms in helping foster an inclusive working environment to improve business results,” Norvell said. “We are equipping our membership with tools to attract, develop and retain diverse talent through awareness, education and social engagement. BISA’s Rising Star program helps recognize and develop diverse talent in the industry.”
Norvell suggested that leaders who want to incorporate D&I initiatives start with executive leadership.
“Executive leadership support and accountability measures are needed to support any successful D&I initiative,” she said.
The BISA Diversity & Inclusion Committee created the infographic below to capture the current landscape of D&I in the banking, insurance and securities sector.
