SEC's "CryptoMom" Fights for Controversial ETF Innovation

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, dubbed “CryptoMom” for her support for cryptocurrencies, has called on the regulator to abandon its approach to approving controversial new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and allow innovation to flourish. Peirce said at a recent conference that the SEC was “still smothering ETFs with personalised attention as if they were infants.” The SEC is expected to publish dedicated ETF rules before the end of this year which should speed up product launches. “We are happy that the SEC [has] proposed the [new] ETF rule because it can now spend its resources on considering more innovative products,” said Jane Heinrichs, associate general counsel of ICI.
