SEC’s Atkins Touts Plan for Digital Delivery of Fund Documents

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins said he has directed staff to draft a proposal allowing investment funds to deliver documents to shareholders electronically by default rather than mailing paper copies. While some e-delivery is already permitted, investors often must opt in. Making digital delivery the default could save hundreds of millions of dollars annually, Atkins said at a Chamber of Commerce event. “We are in the 21st century,” Atkins said, adding that requiring paper documents that get thrown in a landfill is “not the best way to approach things.”
