SEC Submits Framework to White House on Applying Securities Laws to Crypto Assets

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has submitted interpretive guidance to the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs outlining how federal securities laws could apply to cryptocurrencies. The proposal, currently under interagency review, aims to establish a “token taxonomy” that would categorize different types of crypto assets and determine which fall under securities regulation. Such clarity could shape how crypto companies register with regulators, disclose information and operate in U.S. markets. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has prioritized digital asset oversight, though broader legislation in Congress has stalled.
