SEC Issues Long-Awaited Crypto Guidance

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued long-awaited guidance clarifying how cryptocurrencies are classified under securities law. The agency outlined five categories — digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins and digital securities — stating that only digital securities fall under its rules. It also warned that assets not initially considered securities could become so if marketed as profit-generating investments. SEC Chair Paul Atkins proposed a “safe harbor” framework to help crypto firms raise capital while maintaining investor protections.
