SEC, CFTC Start Bid To Align Agencies’ Rules

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced plans to pursue “regulatory harmonization” to address long-standing complaints of overlapping market rules are inconsistent and burdensome. The agencies will host a Sept. 29 event to discuss streamlining capital and margin frameworks, aligning reporting standards and harmonizing product definitions. They will also consider how to regulate emerging areas such as prediction markets, perpetual futures and 24/7 trading. SEC Chair Paul Atkins and acting CFTC Chair Caroline Pham said closer coordination could turn the dual-regulator system into “a source of strength.”
