Sandwich Generation Woes Are Spreading Beyond Gen X

The “sandwich generation” label, once applied mainly to Gen X, is now extending to millennials and Gen Z as financial responsibilities span multiple generations, according to new research from Ameriprise, BMO and the Alliance for Lifetime Income. Many parents continue to support adult children with living expenses, health insurance and education costs, while also caring for aging relatives. Surveys show this strain often delays retirement planning and leads to guilt-driven overspending. Younger parents, too, expect to both give and receive financial help. Advisors are playing a growing role in guiding families to balance short-term obligations with long-term financial security.
