Q2 Sales of Traditional Variable Annuities Rise 25%

U.S. individual annuity sales rose 4% year over year to $124 billion in the second quarter of 2026, according to preliminary LIMRA data, as investors sought protection from market volatility while remaining open to growth opportunities. Traditional variable annuity sales increased 25% to $18 billion, making them the fastest-growing category, while registered index-linked annuities climbed 22% to $23 billion. In contrast, total fixed annuity sales declined 4% to $83 billion, led by a 7% drop in fixed indexed annuities. LIMRA said geopolitical uncertainty, market volatility and higher interest rates boosted demand for products balancing investment potential with downside protection.
