Northern Trust Joins ETF Conversion Boom With $33 Billion Move

Northern Trust Asset Management plans to convert six mutual funds with about $33 billion in assets into exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the first quarter of 2027, roughly doubling its ETF platform to $60 billion. The move reflects a broader industry shift toward ETFs, which are generally cheaper and easier to trade and can offer tax advantages. In 2026, investors pulled hundreds of billions of dollars from both active and passive mutual funds while ETFs attracted more than $1.4 trillion in inflows. Northern Trust’s conversion follows similar moves by firms including Dimensional and JPMorgan, as asset managers increasingly use ETFs to attract and retain investors.
