Low Financial Literacy Leaves Millions Unprepared for Retirement

Allianz Research’s latest Financial Literacy Report finds that millions of people remain poorly prepared for retirement as individuals assume greater responsibility for building wealth and securing their financial futures. Only 17% of respondents qualify as highly financially literate, while one in four have low financial literacy, a level that has changed little since 2023. The report emphasizes that understanding basic financial concepts is increasingly important as traditional institutional support gives way to individual decision-making. Limited financial knowledge can make it harder for households to save effectively, invest wisely, manage risks and plan for retirement, potentially widening gaps in long-term financial security.
