Investment Advisors Surpass Retail as Biggest Holders of U.S.-Listed ETFs

Nearly two-fifths of U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by value are now owned by investment advisors, according to research by Citigroup, compared to about 35% five years ago. Over the same timeframe, retail ownership of U.S.-listed ETFs has fallen from 40% to 38.9%, according. The shift highlighting how professional investors are increasingly using ETFs to build portfolios. “The pandemic has accelerated institutional adoption of ETFs," said Scott Chronert, global head of ETF research at Citi.
