Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow: A BISA 2024 Convention Preview
by: BISA Staff and Tim Layton
The BISA Convention Planning Committee — led by co-chairs Tim Layton and LeAnn Rummel — is at the forefront of shaping our annual gathering, working to create a dynamic event that meets the needs of our industry’s evolving landscape. In this Q&A with Tim Layton, we delve into the strategic planning driving this event, and what attendees can expect from the 2024 Annual Convention.
1. What is the meaning behind this year’s convention theme: Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow?
Tim Layton (TL): The environment we are working in today — whether a large national bank broker-dealer or a community bank operating through a TPM or those servicing them — is changing rapidly. We all need to react quickly and innovate to grow. If we do this, our businesses should thrive.
2. How does the committee evaluate session proposals and decide which ones make the cut?
TL: The process is extremely structured and transparent. Every member of the committee scored each proposal on its content, engagement and quality of speaker. Extra weight was given to the speakers for the keynotes. The scores were then tallied and reviewed to ensure there was a variety of subjects. Our committee came from a diverse cross-section of the BISA membership, so I think we have something of interest for all.
3. Which session are you most excited about at the BISA 2024 Annual Convention?
TL: With all the development in artificial intelligence (AI), I am looking forward to learning more. There is a keynote “Revolutionizing Wealth Management: Exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence” with John Dalton, vice president of research at Fidelity that sounds really interesting. Of course, Dr. Joe Coughlin is always insightful and entertaining, so I am looking forward to his keynote “Longevity, Aging & The Evolving Business of Advice” sponsored by MassMutual Strategic Distributors.
4. What other roles does the committee have beyond session selection?
TL: The committee has several other roles. Helping with driving attendance, being a resource and guide for first-time attendees and soliciting feedback so each year the convention improves and meets our members’ needs.
5. Can you describe your role as co-chair? What do you enjoy most?
TL: Firstly, let me say how privileged I feel working with my other co-chair LeAnn Rummel. She has so much industry knowledge, always seems to see a prudent path forward and most importantly is a wonderful person. Our role as co-chairs has multiple functions. Probably the most important is to help select the members of the Convention Planning Committee from the many applications we received. We wanted to make sure that we had representation from a broad cross section of our members. We also strived to ensure committee members understood their role and felt they have a voice. Rummel and I are also the main liaison between the BISA staff and the committee.
6. What are you looking forward to most at the convention this year?
TL: Every year I look forward to catching up with old friends and making new ones. I believe the content we have planned for this year is exceptional, with something for everyone. Of course, on Thursday evening we have an “After Hours” party, with live music and dessert — jointly sponsored by BISA and the company I work for, WealthVest. That should be a load of fun.
7. What is something that may surprise convention attendees at the convention this year?
TL: There are surprises every year, but I think the attire of the BISA staff and WealthVest team at “After Hours” might be a big one for this year.
