In Reversal, Banks Now Open More Branches Than They Close

U.S. banks are reversing a nearly two-decade trend of branch closures, recording more openings than closings for three consecutive quarters, the first sustained growth since 2009. The second quarter of 2026 added 13 branches, bringing the nine-month net gain to 120. Growth is concentrated in the South, particularly rapidly expanding areas such as Dallas-Fort Worth, while the Northeast and West continue losing locations. The shift reflects population migration and renewed recognition of the value of full-service branches for complex financial needs. However, in-store branches are declining sharply as routine banking increasingly moves online and to mobile platforms.
