Gensler: The SEC Treats Crypto Like the Rest of the Capital Markets

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler opines that the cryptocurrency market should receive the same scrutiny as other capital markets, with its new technology status according it no special treatment. He cites crypto lending platforms' recent account freezes and bankruptcies as demonstrating the importance of their compliance with securities laws. "Platforms that offer crypto lending need to comply anyway, not merely because that's the law, but also because it helps protect investors and increase trust in our markets," Gensler writes. He advises crypto lending platforms "to some in and talk to SEC staff. Getting these platforms into compliance with the securities laws will benefit investors and the crypto market."
