BlackRock Plans To Make the Corporate 401(k) Look More Like a Pension

BlackRock plans to help companies customize 401(k) funds to resemble institutional pension portfolios, combining public stocks and bonds with private assets and annuities providing guaranteed retirement income. The firm will analyze workforce demographics, wages, existing pensions and other factors to tailor investment options for individual companies rather than applying one approach universally. The strategy aims to combine 401(k) portability and individual ownership with pensions’ professional management and retirement-income focus. BlackRock, Vanguard, Fidelity and State Street are developing funds incorporating annuities, while private-market investments are also gaining attention.
